Every successful athlete begins with a dream, but every sporting movement begins with a leader who believes in creating opportunities for others. That leader was Shivam Thakur, who founded the School Games and Activity Development Foundation (SGADF) in 2017 with a vision to transform grassroots sports in India.
When SGADF was established, there were no large stadiums, expensive infrastructure, or professional training centers. There was simply a mission—to identify talented children, provide them with quality sports training, and create opportunities that many young athletes never receive.
Instead of waiting for athletes to come to him, Shivam Thakur personally visited schools and local communities, organizing sports camps where children could learn the fundamentals of sports in a disciplined and encouraging environment.
The journey began in Noida and Greater Noida, where SGADF organized several grassroots coaching camps. Shivam himself trained the children, teaching them physical fitness, sports techniques, discipline, teamwork, and the importance of representing India through sports. These early camps became the foundation of what SGADF has grown into today.
The accompanying photographs capture those memorable moments from SGADF's early years. One image shows Shivam Thakur standing proudly with a group of young trainees after a coaching session, while another captures him presenting a certificate to one of the participants. These photographs represent much more than training camps—they document the beginning of a sporting movement dedicated to empowering young athletes.
As SGADF's work expanded, Shivam Thakur carried the same mission beyond Uttar Pradesh. The organization later organized coaching camps in West Bengal, where many more children received structured sports training and guidance. Despite limited resources during the early years, the commitment to athlete development never changed.
During the foundation's initial phase, Shivam Thakur personally conducted training sessions. He served not only as a coach but also as a mentor, motivator, and role model for every child who joined the camps. His belief was simple: every child deserves an opportunity to discover their sporting potential.
Over the years, more than 74 young athletes received training through these grassroots initiatives. Many of them continued to develop their sporting careers, and several have gone on to participate in prestigious international competitions, including the Asian Games and World Championships. Their achievements stand as a testament to the impact of early guidance and consistent support.
SGADF has always believed that medals are not the only measure of success. The organization's true achievement lies in creating opportunities where none previously existed. For countless young athletes, SGADF became the first platform that gave them confidence, structured coaching, and a pathway toward higher levels of competition.
What started as small evening coaching sessions in local grounds has now grown into an organization working across multiple states and supporting athletes through national and international sporting opportunities. The values established in 2017—discipline, dedication, opportunity, and athlete development—continue to guide SGADF's mission today.
Looking back at these early photographs reminds us that every great journey has humble beginnings. The smiles of the young athletes, the certificates handed out after training, and the dedication of a young coach determined to make a difference all tell the story of SGADF's foundation.
Today, as athletes trained through SGADF compete at national and international levels, the organization's original vision continues to inspire new generations. The success of these players proves that with the right guidance, dedication, and opportunities, grassroots talent can reach the world's biggest sporting stages.
The story of Shivam Thakur and SGADF is more than the story of an organization—it is the story of believing in young talent, investing in the future of Indian sports, and proving that every champion's journey begins with someone willing to give them their very first opportunity.
